MOUND BUILDERS

I made this mask for a production of The Mound Builders by Lanford Wilson. The text calls for a Native American mask made of copper. I found an old sheet of copper that had oxidized and based the design on ceremonial masks that I saw in sketches by George Caitlin. We added thin copper wires as if they once held beads and shells. Later the director suggested that the character who wears the mask add some feathers to adorn his new image. This mask is being used in an upcoming production of King Lear for the Vitalist Theatre of Chicago.
